Philippines' Globe Broadband 3mbps Data Only Review

A little over a week ago, an agent of Globe Broadband came here at my shop and asked me if i will be interested to try their DSL service. I told him, i'm already on PLDT MyDSL. He said that Globe's offering is way better. I can get a 3 mbps connection at only Php 1995. Wow! 3 mbps is 4 times faster than my current connection and it's only twice the price. So with that, he got my attention. I look for my pen and get ready to fill up the forms.

I learned that their phone lines here in our street is newly installed, so he assured me that i can get a good connection. That's good, considering that i heard horror stories about disconnection problems with Globe Broadband. He asked for two ID's and current Meralco bill. That day was Friday and he told me that my connection will be installed the following week. True to his words, somebody from Globe called on Monday and told my Mom that they will install my Broadband on the very next day. Innove employees came to my shop at that day and installed the connection without a hitch.

One thing I like about Globe is their modem, they issued a wifi capable modem/router. It's a PROLINK Hurricane 9300G. A 802.11g Wireless 4-Port Ethernel ADSL2+ Firewall Router. That's way better than my Speedstream modem issued by PLDT which i need to hacked first to enable the router function.

So let's see if the speed is good as advertised. I go to speedtest.net and test my connection. Download speed is good. I easily hit the 3000+ kbps. Upload speed is a little slow. Only 400 kbps just like my pldt DSL and that is a problem since I always upload files to different websites.

Browsing regular websites including youtube is fast, until i decided to visit my favorite private tracker. Lo and behold. It tell me that I am not authorized to view the site because my IP Address is ban. How can that be when my Broadband connection is newly installed? So with a little research, i found out that Globe broadband is implementing IP sharing. It means, you're not the only one using that IP address, you're sharing it with other Globe Broadband users. According to some blogger, Globe is using IronPort and they started implementing it late last year. I also found out that Globe Broadband and Torrent is not a good combination. Because they use transparent proxy, torrent downloads are throttled. I checked my Utorrent download speed and it was only downloading at 40 kBps. So my 3mbps connection is useless because i use torrent for my everyday downloads.

Because of this transparent proxy thing or Ip sharing, you will get a hard time downloading from rapidshare and other services like that because it will say that you had exceeded the number of downloads allowed for your ip address. I also experienced several disconnections that day. Good thing is it only lasts for a few seconds, maybe the router or my connection just needed to reset. Although it is not a big deal for me, it will be a big deal for Online Gamers out there. So i'm not recommending Globe Broadband if you use DSL/Broadband for online games because of this. I also notice that ping is a little high.

Good thing was, i found out a solution for my torrent problem and i will share you what i did for my torrent downloads to run at full speed at my next post tomorrow.

  1. Bosing naka dsl ako 1 mbps, pero actual download speed nya e average 100kbps lang. Ganun b talaga un? Natry ko na rin smart wifi 384kbps, actual download speed is only 40kbps. Hardware dependent ba un? thanks

  2. i believe the highest burst speed na makukuha mo sa 1mpbs is 120 kbps download. So, ok na yan kung pumapalo ka ng 100kbps. hindi sya hardware dependent. depende pa rin syempre sa plan mo sa Globe.

  3. the advertised speed is not the TRUE download speed...
TRUE and ACTUAL download speed can be determine by dividing the advertised speed by 8.
in 384kbps speed, your actual download speed is 48kbps max.
    (384/8=48)
search wikipedia to find out why

  4. FYI:
    384 kbps = 384 kilobits per seconds
to get it into kilobytes, you have to devide it into 8.

    8 bits = 1 byte

    384 / 8 = 48 kBps (notice the capital "B")

that's what you see when you usualy do downloads.

  5. I do not recommend globelines for people who love to download torrents. The speed is so slow! The ports are always blocked. Even if you will be able to open them using portforwarding the result is still the same. This has never happened with my PLDT dsl. I really regret having applied for globelines. To all who reads this comment, do not let globelines ruin your life! I am a living testimony!

  6. bossing naka 1mb din ako globe, may solution ka ba ng laging change ip add siya, kaya parating ako nag on/off connections?

  7. kbps is different from Kbps. test your speed at speakeasy.net/speedtest , and there's an explanation there.
on the disconnection problem, you change your router settings from adsl 2+ to just adsl.

  8. wala.. Bulok talaga ang serbisyo ng globe.. San ka naman nakakita ng maintenance na isang lingo, may sira daw ang transmitter. Ng smart bro na lang sana ako or digitel, i also regret applying on their service.. Nakakainis.. Pag tumawag ka sa tech support nila, mga walang alam ahente nila, ang alam lang gawin ay mag apologize, wala namang aksyon.. Hoy Globe.. Ayusin nyo naman, magaling lang kayo pag bayaran..

Hardware dependent ba un? thanks>>If you are using wifi, it depends on the distance of the transmitter... that's like a cellphone, if your away from cellsite poor in signal..wireless users expect frequent disconnection kapag windy... If you are using DSL, it depends on how many are connected to that port in your area, and if it can handle multiple user/client,

comment on Internet Providers, improve your service, don't do pure marketing...wag nmn palaging money ang isipin nyo, dont implement crab mentality to become on top... Thanks...

  12. HOY kung sino ka man ang INTERNET ACCESS IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE REGULATED. Ano yan, parang baso ng tubig? kapag napuno na, lalagyan ng maliit na butas para may ma-accomodate? duh. buti pa talaga pldt mydsl. sorry ah, nasa pilipinas kami. hanggang 5mbps lang ang pinakamabilis na speed for residential, unlike japan and korea na greater than 45 mbps.

  13. And Globe DSL has a built in auto disconnect every hour which disrupts your browsing and surfing, and disconnects your yahoo and downloads and GAMES. Seems they should eliminate this as many blogs complain about the constant disconnects for Globe DSL!

And I have never never achieved the promised max 1mbps second it always maxs out at less than 700 kbps so they save a lot of money never giving max promised.

  16. I receive a globe broadband (DSL) brochure sa area ko (QC) and tama ba tong mga package nila, aside sa normal package na 254kbps upto 2mbps there's two additional package:
    3,995 - 10 Mbps
    14,995 - 100 Mbps
I asked the globe personel promiting this promo sa area namin and she said the 10mbps and 100mbps package is available sa area namin.... wow!

The 10 Mbps package is very tempting kaso 20% lang of actuall speed (10000/8 then get 20% of it) ang magagamit for P2P download. Nakalagay sa sya sa terms of agreement... hay!

BTW, i'm a PLDT MyDSL user since 2004 and my bother usually gets 250- 300 kbps downstreem for torrent download (he downloads naruto, bleach anime etc). and i can use it to play COD4 online on my xbox 360 (walang lag) kaso di ko lam kung anong DSL package sya. As for support the support super bilis, yes you read it right mabilis kasi naka corporate account ako..hehehe So i guess this is a way to get faster support from PLDT, i think extra 500 pesos ata sa montly bills (not sure though). BUt in my case sulit naman kasi pag tumawag ako, they will work on it remotely within a day (reset port etc) and kapag di maayos remotely tomorow morning they will send two unit vans isang van mag check ng physical line, isa mag check ng DSL modem ko and they work closely with people sa CO and sa Data network facility and eto pa 90 percent of the time they fixed all problem within 3 days after i reported problem.

  17. I've heard that if you apply for a static connection there will be no disconnect/connect....The question is how much will it cost? I'm also having the same problem. I can't finish an online game especially ggclient. I get disconnected 3x and hour. Globe sucks..

  20. I just upgraded from my Globe broadband 1.5 Mbps to 3 Mbps. I also upgraded to static IP address for free.

But if you're upgrading, please take note that you should emphasize that you want a new wifi router. Because the customer service told me that i can request for a new wifi router after upgrading. Then when i request for a new wifi router as a replacement for the single port router they provided, the customer service told me that I have to pay extra to have that. He told me that I shouhave done that when I requested for an upgrade.
